i guess do whatever moves you Only God could have done something like that .  And Paul isn’t talking about miracles. Although what he’s talking about is a miracle; in a way… No, Paul is talking about The Gospel. Only God could have decided to call the un godly. That’s what “the Gospel” is, God’s decision to be God for those who have turned from God. After all, who would ever decide to overcome godlessness, by being a God for exactly those who have turned from God ? Only God could have done something like that . Something like that , could only be a revelation from God… …Only God could have done something like that. And Paul isn’t talking about miracles. Although what he’s talking about is a miracle… No, Paul is talking about his own call .  Only God could have done something like call someone like him , to be an apostle. After all, who would ever thinking of calling a persecutor of the church, to be its advocate? Only God could hav...

but you idiot kid, you don't have a clue A sermon from Paul's epistle to the Philippians: “For [Jesus’] sake I have suffered the loss of all things,” sighs Paul. Talk about a tough sell… Paul was never much of a salesman, though. And it wasn’t just that he didn’t have such instincts. No, Paul had too much trust in his Lord, and he had too much respect for his hearers to do something like, try and peddle worshipping the Risen Christ… “For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things,” admits Paul.  That’s a hard God to talk about. A God who would demand everything . A God who would even let it all be lost.  No, this kind of talk about God, isn’t our favorite… Paul has that evangelistic fervor, though. You can’t help but have the sense he would gladly polish his pitch; if only he could.  The trouble, however, is the kind of God we have. A God who doesn’t share. A jealous God… If you’re going to try and get someone to join yo...

...these shackles i've made in an attempt to be free A sermon from Philippians There are days when faith comes as easy as a spring sunrise. Things go the way they ought to. Everything just falls into place… The trouble, though, is those days are fewer and further apart than the other days. The days when faith does not come easy. Whatsoever…  Too often, right when we wake up, what faith we’ve managed to cobble together is already threatening to break apart. We have to gather our faith up. We try to hold it together. We do what we can to get through our days with our faith in one piece. Intact.  As my favorite musician quips, “ We need faith for the same reason it’s so hard to find. ” That’s the trouble. It isn’t easy to keep up the faith, is it? We hear the pastor drone on, how God is a God of love. After a short hour we have to leave . We have to live most of our lives out there, in the real-world.  The headlines of terror and trag...

trying not to tear it apart Martin Luther once said, “Faith is a living, daring confidence in God's grace, so sure and certain that a man could stake his life on it a thousand times.” A living, daring confidence in God’s grace … Saul had lived his life atop his high horse; defending the faith, capturing those deviant christians and jailing or even killing them.  Until one day, from left-field he was knocked from his perch because he heard the voice of the one he’d been hunting. Only this voice wasn’t declaring vengeance but asking, “Saul, why are you persecuting me?” In the face of God’s unlikely and unexpected declaration, Saul’s only recourse, really, was empty-handed trust.  Faith is a living, daring confidence in God’s grace. Long before Paul had come to experience such a profound change that he needed to change his name, though, Sarai and Abram were doing what they could to carve out a life. Without any children to support them in their old ...
