i wanna be open A sermon on wise King Solomon and all his folly : The LORD appears TO Solomon in a dream by night. And then, who knows why, offers Solomon carte blanche . Ask what I should GIVE you ,” ORDERS the Lord of heaven and earth. What would you do in such a situation? And keep in mind, your answer, like Solomon’s, will reveal a lot about you. Maybe more than you’d like. Turns out, more is at stake here than a mere windfall. Solomon doesn’t just stand to gain his heart’s desire. He also stands to reveal just what it is his heart really CHASES after. And when you consider it like that , it’s hard not to be at least a little grateful you weren’t in Solomon’s shoes, or should I say slippers, that night.   Solomon, though , was ready. When God came calling, Solomon stood tall . When he was offered what essentially amounted to a blank check, Solomon made the right decision. He could have had it all , BUT all he asked for was wisdom . Wisdom. So admirable is Solomon’s req...

this love isn't crazy A sermon on stewardship from the Gospel of Mark : As far as I know, this is the only account of someone turning down Jesus’ invitation to follow him. For as surprising as this is, and it is surprising, it’s an even bigger surprise who it is that can’t answer Jesus’ call. Because this is a fellow who never met a challenge he can’t meet. He’s motivated , scrupulous , and he’s got plenty of resources behind him, too. Picture the scene, Jesus is going along, minding his own business, when all of a sudden this man runs up to him and lays himself out before Jesus. Now, this kind of thing is not entirely uncommon where Jesus is concerned. However , this chap isn’t seeking healing or anything like that. Most people who throw themselves before Jesus are at the end of their rope. This man, however, is at the top of his game! He’s got it all together . He’s managed to keep the finer points of the law. And as we learn later , he’s also managed to attain a degree of ...

i'm aware that you're cheatin' A sermon on the creation and fall of Adam and Eve : In these days of COVID, Amanda and I have taken no small amount of pleasure by dusting off old records and giving them another spin.   Lately, we’ve been playing Diana Ross’ album, “Diana,” nearly non-stop. As you may know, the first track on this excellent album is the outstanding single, Upside Down .   “Upside down / Boy, you turn me / Inside out / and round and round,” Diana sings. Celebrating that her world has been flipped on its head!   As Diana and Nile Rodgers swagger and strut their way through the song, it’s clear that although it may be disorienting to be turned upside down, inside out, and round and round. It’s the best kind of disorienting. Which I reckon you have your own hunch about. After all, isn’t that why you’re searching out the Word? If you’re anything like me , all week you’ve been trying to do everything in your power to keep a handle on your time. Schedulin...

while  they're waiting on glory A sermon on Jeremiah 13 , of all  things... Jeremiah is instructed to buy a new pair of “linen shorts.” And by linen shorts , we mean what my grandmother always called “ unmentionables .” Jeremiah was a bachelor , he had no wife or children. But lest you think God is just giving the guy a lesson on when it’s time to replace his undergarments; God tells Jeremiah NOT to take the skivvies off. Not even to wash them, even! Then God sends Jeremiah off to Perath.   Now keep in mind, that trip was extremely long ! Like, months long! And , keep in mind, the traveling conditions: hot and dry. Okay, that should be about all the information you need to imagine the state of Jeremiah’s BVDs by the time he got to his destination. Not exactly fresh… Finally in Perath, Jeremiah is relieved. And boy, do I bet he was relieved , because there he finally got to take off those old Hanes. In Perath Jeremiah is   to...
